Art was the first method of conveying to others our perception of the universe and what we have learned during our time on earth. An astounding ancient attempt to share the awareness of our inclusion in the mathematics of the universe and the “all” of things. Art was the primary method of tapping into and communicating the awe felt by primordial humans when their lives were inextricably tied to nature.
Those of us fortunate enough to feel comfortable translating our discoveries visually have the opportunity to share them through the “language of art.” We artists spend our lives attempting to perfect our translations. Our mediums are simply the tools. The pieces that we create act as our portals. When you look at a piece of art and it pulls you through a window into another train of thought or feeling, you are experiencing the “language of art.” It is transportive. Words are an encumbrance here. There is no literal meaning. So, when observing a work of art, whether representational or abstract, simply let it take you where it will. And resist the urge to ask, “but what does it mean?”
